THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENAJMIN BUTTON

(US, 2008) Stars Cate Blanchett, Brad Pitt, Taraji P. Henson, Tilda Swinton, Elias Koteas, Jason Flemyng, Julia Ormond. “.. this most curious of love stories is elongated to just under three hours by director David Fincher, who caresses little details that make the film both fascinating and credible…. I love the bizarreness of the tale and the poignancy with which it is told,” says Louise. “This is a beautifully made film … but ... it is also a piece of cinematic artifice, in which the manufacture of it stands between it and us … big on novelty and sentimentality but short on tension and interest for the audience,” says Andrew. VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA

(Spain/US, 2008) stars Javier Bardem, Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall, Penelope Cruz. “Love has never been so complicated as in Woody Allen’s scrumptious Vicky Cristina Barcelona, a sexy romp involving a ménage à trois that keeps changing like the ever-changing tide of love itself,” says Louise. “Occasionally endearingly audacious, Woody Allen’s screenplay for Vicky Cristina Barcelona is a further riff on the unique, unpredictable nature of romantic relationships among the human race. His observation of the female characters (and not just the leads) is spot on,” says Andrew. REVIEWS

FROST / NIXON

(US, 2008) Stars Michael Sheen, Frank Langella, Sam Rockwell, Kevin Bacon. “Langella and Sheen deliver striking portrayals that avoid superficial mimicry for something more satisfying. The supporting cast are all superb, too, with Kevin Bacon a standout as Nixon’s protective lieutenant … Peter Morgan’s script cuts through to the intense personal as well as political aspects,” says Andrew. “More thrilling than a boxing match with no punches spared, this riveting revisiting of a historic moment in time has a little bit of everything – humour, tension and an exposé of the most compelling ingredient of all – humanity,” says Louise. I’VE LOVED YOU SO LONG

(France, 2008) Stars Kristin Scott Thomas, Elsa Zylberstein, Serge Hazanavicius. “Filled with intricate emotions, this sensitive and beautifully restrained film blossoms from its austere beginnings to a rich and satisfying conclusion with finesse and elegance. The plot is outwardly simple, yet it conceals a maze of complexities that first time director Philippe Claudel masterfully reveals a little at a time,” says Louise. “Each relationship is deftly, brilliantly sketched and the relationship snapshots are satisfyingly complex,” says Andrew. THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL

(US, 2008) stars Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, Kathy Bates, Jaden Smith, John Cleese. “At the casting session for the role of the alien, Klaatu, the filmmakers sought the actor who could do wooden; ‘Keanu Reeves’ came the chorus from around the table. For contrast, they cast the emotionally open and communicative Jennifer Connelly as the woman who must convince Klaatu to save the human race. By this time, the damage had been done and the new screenplay was written. Instead of the 1950s mindset – postwar, cold war, fear of aliens – it’s been resettled into the mindset of today – man’s inhumanity to the planet,” says Andrew. “It was a great little B movie then, and it’s an ugly big B movie now.” REVIEW

(US, 2008) Stars Adam Sandler, Keri Russell, Russell Brand, Guy Pearce. “If you like Adam Sandler’s loud and bawdy style (or lack of it), you will warm to this lively and undemanding fable that reminds us we are limited only by our imagination,” says Louise. REVIEW

(US, 2008) Voices of John Travolta, Miley Cyrus, Susie Essman, Mark Walton. “If you feel as though you need to borrow a child to buy a ticket for this cutest of cute films, go right ahead. You won’t want to miss this adorable animated film about a dog who thinks he’s a superhero,” says Louise. REVIEW

MARLEY & ME

(US, 2008) stars Owen Wilson, Jennifer Aniston. “ ... a portrait of a marriage, a glimpse of a writer struggling to discover his strengths but above all, it is a touching story about the profound love between a man and his dog… but I have two gripes with this film” says Louise. REVIEW

YES MAN

(US, 2008) stars Jim Carrey, Zooey Deschanel, Terence Stamp. “The real question could well be why does Jim Carrey say Yes to these stupid films that do nothing to showcase his considerable talent. The main problem with Yes Man is not the basic concept, but the fact that the story is not grounded in reality,” says Louise. REVIEW

BEFORE THE RAINS

(India/UK/USA, 2007) Stars Linus Roache, Rahul Bose. “The ingredients of this melodrama are more powerful than the sum of its parts. The film certainly looks beautiful as it captures the lush beauty of its mountainous, green Indian landscape, but acclaimed cinematographer turned director Santosh Sivan is only partially successful when it comes to the storytelling,” says Louise. SEVEN POUNDS

(US, 2008) stars Will Smith, Rosario Dawson, Woody Harrelson. “Morality has never seemed as arduous as in this morbidly drawn, intense drama filled with questions and pretension ... even the charismatic Smith cannot save this absurd tale,” says Louise. “…suffers from being too earnest and sentimental, overdone and grim, even when it should have our spirits soar. It’s the kind of premise that a writer will lovingly nurture and probe, but it fails the truth test. As a love story it’s unsatisfactory and as a redemption story it’s slightly ridiculous,” says Andrew. REVIEWS

IGOR

(US/France, 2008) Voices of John Cusack, Steve Buscemi, John Cleese, Jennifer Coolidge. “With a curly twist on the mad scientist concept, this subversively inventive animation bubbles over with originality and amusing dialogue. The animation is Tim Burtonesque and the story’s hero after whom the film is titled is an endearing mushroom-like hunchback with soulful eyes, voiced brilliantly by John Cusack,” says Louise. THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX

(UK/US, 2008) Voices of Matthew Broderick, Dustin Hoffman, Emma Watson. “..offers some pleasures as we enter the realms of the worlds of mice, rats and humans, but the screenplay is cluttered and confuses. Humour, fantasy and drama swirl together, but the blending is far from seamless,” says Louise. “Laboured and disjointed, the film has none of the charm of a Ratatouille or a Shrek, but seems derivative of them. The animation is bland, although Roscuro has some interest as a character, and the only saving visual grace is the film’s production design, which offers interest,” says Andrew. REVIEWS

THE BANK JOB – stars Jason Statham, Saffron Burrows, Stephen Campbell Moore. “..a royal scandal, exotic locations, MI5 involvement, a brothel with a clientele from high places, corrupt cops, romance and a heist by a bunch of small-time crooks,” says Louise.

THE ENGLISH SURGEON – Documentary featuring Dr Henry Marsh and Dr Igor Petrovich. “This multi-award winning doco is a riveting insight into something that goes on every day within reach of us all, but out of sight and mind,” says Andrew.

GETTING GOTTI – stars Lorraine Bracco, Anthony John Denison, Ellen Burstyn. “Lorraine Bracco tears up the screen in a feisty performance as Diane Giacalone, the New York Assistant Attorney who gets on the case of the Mafia thug, John Gotti,” says Andrew.

HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY – stars Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Doug Jones, Luke Goss. “.. a spectacularly vibrant, varied, detailed, freakish, magical, surreal and exciting universe,” says Andrew.

KEATING THE MUSICAL – stars Mike McLeish, Terry Serio, Brendan Coustley; ‘Sizzling lyrics and bright contempo music with texture and variety drive the show forward; play it on the biggest screen you have, and turn up the volume,’ says Andrew.

SON OF A LION – stars Niaz Khan Shinwari, Sher Alam Miskeen Ustad, Agha Jaan. “..a great example of the power of a good story well executed,” says Andrew.

SWEETIE – stars Genevieve Lemon, Karen Colston, Tom Lycos. “..a helter skelter ride through the offbeat life of a suburban Australian family whose youngest daughter is ‘abnormal’,” says Andrew.

SALUTE – documentary. ‘This wonderful humanitarian story - especially relevant on the eve of the Beijing Olympics - deserves to be told and it's a bit of a surprise it hasn't been told before, while Peter Norman was still alive,’ says Andrew.

KIDDIES DVD:
KIDDIES DVD:

TINKER BELL – animated; ‘With a sprinkle of fairy dust, Tinker Bell bursts onto our DVD screens in an enchanting, colourful animated adventure that the whole family will love,’ says Louise.

THE LITTLE MERMAID: ARIEL’S BEGINNING – animated; ‘It’s a beautifully told, charming story with lyrical songs and fabulous dance routines. Children of any age will adore this bright, funny and happy story that reinforces the joy of laughter and music,’ says Louise.

SPACE CHIMPS – voices of Jeff Daniels, Andy Samberg; ‘A sweet and harmless family film, Space Chimps finds a story excuse to send three chimps into space in search of an unmanned NASA probe that was gobbled up by an intergalactic wormhole. Don’t you hate when that happens?’ says Andrew.

DRAMA/ACTION DVD

THE MUMMY: THE TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR – stars Brendan Fraser, Jet Li, Maria Bello, John Hannah; ‘The film is a never-ending barrage of visual effects - some of them extraordinary, admittedly - but so relentless and uninvolving under Rob Cohen's direction that by the end, even the most amazing stunt becomes a bit of a yawn,’ says Louise.

TAKEN – stars Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, Famke Janssen; ‘Taken delivers non-stop action with Liam Neeson in devastating form as the former security agent who turns Paris upside down as he searches for his abducted daughter,’ says Louise.

SOULKEEPER – stars Iain Glenn, Emilia Fox; ‘In many ways the Jung/Spielrein affair is an extraordinary story, not only as an illicit romance but as one that is linked to Jung’s first attempt at using Freud’s psychoanalytical methods to help a patient,’ says Andrew.

STOP LOSS – stars Ryan Philippe, Abbie Cornish; ‘In this disturbing film, director Kimberly Peirce tells a different kind of war story,’ says Louise.

SPEED RACER – stars Emil Hirsch, Christina Ricci; ‘The look of the film is mind-boggling. Scenes slide into each other with the smooth transition of a racing car effortlessly changing lanes,’ says Louise.

WRONG BET – stars Jean-Claude Van Damme; ‘Accompanied by an occasionally jazzy score, the film has a solid dramatic base on which to build the Jean-Claude Van Damme action,’ says Andrew.

MARIA’S LOVERS – stars Nastassja Kinski, John Savage, Robert Mitchum; ‘A sensitive and subtle film about love, lust and emotional scars, the title is perhaps misleading. The film explores the quandary that two lovers face when sexual inadequacy causes a void in their relationship,’ says Louise.

FUNNY GAMES – stars Naomi Watts, Tim Roth; ‘Michael Haneke likes to inflict pain – on his characters and equally on his audiences, in equal measure. The actors usually fake most of it, but not us,’ says Andrew.

MARLON BRANDO RETRO
MARLON BRANDO RETRO

NIGHT FOLLOWING DAY – stars Marlon Brando, Richard Boone; ‘Just two films and four years prior to his late career, Oscar winning signature role as Don Corleone in The Godfather (1972), Marlon Brando - in blond mode - plays a much smaller time crim: a chauffeur come kidnapper. It's a terrific role, a sympathetic baddie who has certain standards,’ says Andrew.

THE UGLY AMERICAN – stars Marlon Brando, Sandra Church; ‘Brando is excellent, as is Okada (notwithstanding his Japanese ethnicity) as the two old friends find themselves on opposing political sides - both right, both wrong,’ says Andrew.

BABY MAMA – stars Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Greg Kinnear; ‘There are plenty of laughs in this likeable and uplifting comedy that puts its own twist on life, love, relationships and babies,’ says Louise.

PINEAPPLE EXPRESS – stars Seth Rogan, James Franco; ‘Filled with expletives and dumbed down crass humour, the strength of Pineapple Express lies in the sweetly naive central characters played by Rogen and James Franco, whose bond is cemented by the weed they smoke,’ says Louise.

WITLESS PROTECTION – stars Larry the Cable Guy; ‘Witless, lowbrow fun is the signature of this so-so comedy with Larry the Cable Guy in fine fat form as a country bumpkin deputy sheriff with delusions of grander than smalltown cop,’ says Andrew.

ZOMBIE STRIPPERS – stars Jenna Jameson, Robert Englund; ‘Here’s a title that lives up to its expectations; Jay Lee’s schlockingly funny horror flick is filled with inventive ideas and delivers in spades for fans of the genre,’ says Louise.

MYSTERY - HORROR DVD
MYSTERY - HORROR DVD

THE INNOCENTS – stars Deborah Kerr; ‘This classy English mystery is adorned by a wonderful Deborah Kerr as the governess driven to extremes by a strange, haunted mansion and strange, haunted children,’ says Andrew.

DEVIL’S CHAIR – stars Andrew Howard, Polly Brown, Olivia Hill; ‘Angry young working class Nick West (Andrew Howard) narrates this hideous story for us in an engaging and self-referential manner that, surprisingly enough, adds to the entertainment value,’ says Andrew. href="/home/view.asp?a=15236&s=DVD">THE SECRET – stars David Duchovny, Olivia Thrilby; ‘David Duchovny, something of a specialist in roles involving the paranormal and supernatural, delivers a well judged characterisation of Benjamin, father and husband faced with the inconvenient truth of his daughter's body inhabited by his dead wife's persona,’ says Andrew.

WISHES DVD

MAKE IT HAPPEN – stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Tessa Thompson; ‘We know the trajectory, it's a question of how brightly the rocket burns and how interested we are in the astronauts aboard this dance missile from small town Indiana to Chicago Big Time Dance School,’ says Andrew.

THE GUITAR – stars Saffron Burrows; ‘We've probably all wondered what we'd do if given a few short months to live and the premise of The Guitar takes one self indulgent option,’ says Andrew.
