URBAN CINEFILE BEGINS 10TH YEAR

We’re proud and pleased to celebrate our 9th anniversary this week, with our 468th weekly edition. As we enter our 10th year, we look back at some milestones and forward to another 12 months of movie news & reviews for our many readers, both here in Australia and around the world, from Iceland and New Zealand to USA, UK, Eastern and Western Europe, Brazil, India, Macedonia, Togo, Russian Federation, China, Singapore, Chile, Iran, Israel, South Africa, Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Kuwait, Ukraine, Venezuela, Egypt, Fiji, Barbados, Panama, Algeria, Puerto Rico, Sudan, Bangladesh, Botswana, Monaco, Bolivia, Trinidad and more.

Thanks to our contributors, Urban Cinefile has been a regular source of good reading about the world of film from an Australian perspective for nine years. And thanks to our syndication partners (see below) we have succeeded as an independent internet publication sharing our editorial content with them.

Since our first edition on February 27, 1997, some of the milestones we celebrate include:

• Winning the gold Award in the Best Arts & Entertainment Site category of the Telstra/Australia Financial Review Internet Awards (1998). We were also one of the three finalists in the last such Awards held, in 2000.

• Urban Cinefile has been identified as an online publication “of lasting cultural value” by the National Library of Australia, and is archived on a regular basis in the NLA’s Pandora Project.

• As part of our fourth birthday celebrations in February 2001, we established the Urban Cinefile Birthday Honours List, recognising Outstanding Achievement by Australians in the world of film. This marked the first time that Australians working internationally (not just in Australian films) were recognised by Australians, and inaugural honours went to Russsell Crowe (Gladiator), Heath Ledger (The Patriot), Lisa Gerrard (music, Gladiator), John Seale (cinematography, The Talented Mr Ripley & The Perfect Storm), David Eggby (cinematography, Pitch Black) and John Cox (creature effects, Pitch Black); Russell announced the recipients via streaming video on Urban Cinefile.

• Since we launched Urban Cinefile, we have at one time or another syndicated our reviews and other articles to several major online portals, including CitySearch, AOL, Telstra Big Pond Movies, Telstra WAP Mobile, Optusnet, Optus Mobile and Yahoo! – and produced a weekly movie review program for subscription television channels Ovation and World Movies.

• We became inaugural sponsors of the Sydney Film Festival’s Urban Cinefile Audience Awards in 2005, in which winning filmmakers across six categories take home specially designed trophies - and the kudos that goes with such awards.
