MY BOLLYWOOD BRIDE: DVD
When novelist Alex (Jason Lewis) meets Reena (Kashmera Shah) who is holidaying in California, little does he know she is a Bollywood star. They spend four wonderful days together, before Reena goes back to India without a word. On a whim, Alex flies to Mumbai looking for Reena, and discovers the truth when he sees her photo on a movie billboard. He also discovers that she is about to marry mafia-style movie mogul Shekhar (Gulshan Grover) in an arranged marriage.
Review by Louise Keller
Formulaic and predictable, My Bollywood Bride may not offer anything new, but it's a likeable romantic comedy as love ignites on a Californian holiday and blooms on a Bollywood set in Mumbai. Real-life Bollywood star Kashmera Shah is delightful in the title role, but Jason Lewis's Alex is unconvicing.
'Welcome to the United States of India,' says Ash Chandler's slick-talking Mumbai taxi driver Priyad, as he helps Alex search for the girl who stole his heart. The premise that Alex would fly all the way to India with nothing but Reena's first name is paper thin (wouldn't he have checked at the hotel where she had been staying), but after experiencing traffic chaos, skyscrapers, Indian music and local colour, he spies her picture on a giant billboard. The Bollywood film studio is the logical next stop, and Alex sneaks into the costume department, dons a dancer's costume and surprises Reena backstage. 'It's complicated; something came up,' she tells him weakly, when he asks why she left without a word. Alex's reaction when he discovers Reena is engaged to an underworld movie producer (Gulshan Grover) is equally unconvincing: 'You really going to marry this Shekar guy?' he asks.
The subplot with Reena's ambitious co-star Bobby (Sajay Suri) and his budding romance with lovely choreographer Alisha (Neha Dubey), is delightful; it's easily the most entertaining part of the film. Alex takes Bobby's advice to 'go with the flow, bro,' while Reena's fiancé Shekar tells him 'India is like a woman - mysterious, beautiful and impossible to understand.'
My Bollywood Bride is sweet escapism on a colourful Indian backdrop. As to be expected, there's a last minute dramatic dash to the airport, but we are never in any doubt of the happy ending.
