24/1/2008: MELB BASED CRITICS MAKE NOISE BEST

Noise has been voted Best Australian Film at the inaugural Australian Film Critics’ Association (AFCA) awards, with Forbidden Lies voted Best Documentary and No Country for Old Men the Best Foreign Film.

AFCA also introduced an award for Best Unreleased Film, which was won by the Israeli film, The Band’s Visit. Formed in 1996, AFCA started life as the Melbourne Film Critics’ Forum, expanding to a national organization in 2004. In the same year, AFCA became a member of FIPRESCI, (International Federation of Film Critics and Film Journalists) and in 2007 helped to establish the first FIPRESCI jury at the Adelaide Film Festival.

The Sydney based Film Critics Circle of Australia, also a FIPRESCI member, is presenting its awards on February 1.
