The World of Film in Australia - on the Internet Updated Tuesday July 28, 2020

The 12th course of Movies Now, presented at the Chauvel by Andrew L. Urban for Sydney University’s Centre for Continuing Education, closed last Wednesday with the warmly received premiere of savage English political satire, In the Loop (releasing in Australia January 21, 2009), with a post screening discussion (with guest Peter Castaldi) and wrap drinks.

The course, presenting movies - unannounced - prior to their commercial release and followed by a group discussion, has turned into something of a movie club, with many regulars among the 60 participants who signed up for course 12.

"effectively public Sydney or Australian premieres"

The other five films screened were also effectively public Sydney or Australian premieres: An Education (UK), North Face (Germany, Aust release Jan. 21), Prime Mover (Aust), Amelia (US) and Amreeka (US/Kuwait). Guests included Prime Mover writer/director David Caesar, award winning screen composer Guy Gross, giant format filmmaker John Weiley, Karen Pearlman (Head of Screen Studies at AFTRS) and Cherien Dabis, award winning writer/director of Amreeka, via a recorded interview from Los Angeles.

Participants ranged from a Berlin couple living in Sydney for 6 months to junior and senior executives (male and female) and an expat American.
