As part of our fourth birthday celebrations in February 2001, we are establishing the Urban Cinefile Birthday Honours List, recognising Outstanding Achievement by Australians in the world of film. This is the first Australian vehicle to pay tribute to Australians working internationally, as well as in Australian films.

The Urban Cinefile Birthday Honours List for Outstanding Achievement in Film by Australians is intended as a mark of recognition – but without the strictures and the structure of antiquated award systems. Prestige without pomposity! Acclaim without acceptance speeches! Recognition without rejection! (But recipients will receive an official Honour Certificate.)

Australians are contributing more and more to the world of film internationally, both behind the camera and in front of it:

In recent years, Australian talent has helped films such as William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet, Portrait of a Lady, Elizabeth, Shakespeare in Love, An Ideal Husband, Les Miserables, 10 Things I Hate About You, Eyes Wide Shut, Jurassic Park, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Ride With the Devil, The Matrix, Snow Falling on Cedars and LA Confidential – to mention some.

And from last year’s releases, they helped make The Talented Mr Ripley, Mansfield Park, Gladiator, The Sixth Sense, X-Men, The Insider, Pitch Black, The Perfect Storm, Double Jeopardy, Eye of the Beholder, The Cup, Shaft, Rules of Engagement, The Patriot, Bicentennial Man and Vertical Limit, among others.

All Australians, whether working in low budget local films or Hollywood blockbusters will be eligible for this new Honour.

The inuagural Honours List, in respect of films released in Australia during 2000, will be announced in an exclusive netcast on the Urban Cinefile Channel on Wednesday, February 28 in streaming video by a special guest (to be announced shortly), in the company of Editors Andrew L. Urban & Louise Keller. It will be published in text form later the same day.

The Honours List of recipients will also be published in Moving Pictures, the international film industry monthly (established 1990), published from London, circulated around the world to Hollywood studios, filmmakers and film festivals, plus senior executives in film production, distribution and film finance in the US, UK, Europe and Australasia.
