The World of Film in Australia - on the Internet Updated Tuesday July 28, 2020

In a historic juxtaposition that perhaps underscores the shifts in the sand of Australian society, all four Best Film nominees in this year’s AFI Awards - Australian Rules, Beneath Clouds, Rabbit Proof Fence and The Tracker - examine issues of indigenous culture, reports Andrew L. Urban.

The directors of each film are also nominated for the Best Director award, and include acclaimed young Aboriginal filmmaker Ivan Sen (Beneath Clouds), veteran mainstream director Phil Noyce (Rabbit Proof Fence), first timer Paul Goldman (Australian Rules) and experienced arthouse filmmaker Rolf De Heer (The Tracker).

This list of nominees deserves accolades and recognition; it is not just a series of entries in a race, but a mark of achievement by the filmmakers. Without detracting from the glory of winning, we should also ensure we do not dismiss those on the shortlist of the pursuit of excellence.

The Awards will be presented on Saturday, December 7 in Melbourne and televised live on Channel 10.
