OSCARS 2005 - THE WINNERS

CLINT CLINCHES IT
Forgivable outpourings of national pride swamped this year’s live Oscars telecast at Sydney’s Paddington Town Hall hosted by NW magazine when the Oscar went to Cate Blanchett for her portrayal of Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator; indeed it was the high point of the night for the film’s director Martin Scorsese, too, who watched Clint Eastwood become the oldest living director to win the Best Director Award as well as Best Picture for his dark but brilliant Million Dollar Baby, Andrew L. Urban reports.

Dressed and lit to resemble a Los Angelean nightery, the Paddo Town Hall almost floated off to movie heaven on pools of Moet & Chandon as Chris Rock made his Oscar hosting debut, and the only disappointment for the 300 or so guests was in the Animated Short category, where Birthday Boy – produced at the AFTRS by Andrew Gregory with Sejong Park directing – remained a nominee. (Melbourne audiences will get to see the Canadian animated short that won the Oscar, Ryan, and meet its creator, Chris Landreth, at ACMI as part of this year's 2005 Melbourne International Animation Festival, on June 22; it will be one of the 200 shorts selected from around the world.)

It’s worth noting that The Sea Inside, which won the Best Foreign Language Oscar, deals with themes as dark as Million Dollar Baby; in fact, as Susie Porter noted during the telecast, there were several films with dark themes, which might get commentators thinking about the mood of filmmaking.
