BONHEUR EST DANS LE PRE, LE: DVD

SYNOPSIS:
Francis Bergeade (Michel Serrault) is a successful businessman whose life is made miserable by a whingeing, cold wife and whingeing employees in his toilet seat factory. His only pleasures are the gastronomic adventures with his old friend Gerard (Eddy Mitchell). His life changes (so do a few others) when a photo bearing a striking resemblance to him is shown on a TV show "Where Are You Now?", when a woman and her own grown-up daughters appeals for contact with her long lost husband.

Review by Louise Keller:
Black comedy is probably my favourite genre, and the French have a knack for getting it right. Le Bonheur Est Dans Le Pre (Happiness is in the Field) is a witty black comedy with an imaginative script and delectable performances. Immaculately directed by Etienne Chatiliez, the scenery is beautiful and the characters made especially appealing by their paradoxes.

Francis is hard-nosed and insensitive, yet he has a well-developed conscience when it comes to sleeping with another man's wife and spending money that is not his own. Dolores is so gentle, patient and good - yet she matter-of-factly slaughters the ducks on the farm without the flicker of an eye; Nicole is cold and heartless, but throws up violently when she sees Dolores killing the animals.

The development of the relationships between the characters is a joy to watch - a real highlight of the film is the unique relationship shared by Francis (Michel Serrault) and Gerard (Eddy Mitchell), who punctuate life with memorable gastronomic experiences.

This will especially appeal to the kind of audience that revelled in the black comedy in such offerings as Wild Target. And for those wishing to dig beneath the amusing and highly entertaining surface, there lies a more fundamental issue of morality, and whether or not there is harm in building happiness based on a lie. This is a treat for the connoisseur.
