IF AWARDS 2005 – WINNERS

A GOOD PROPOSITION EITHER WAY YOU LOOK AT IT
By the way they are shared among several films, the 2005 IF Awards – where Australian films are rated by the public – confirm the proposition that it has been a good year for Aussie cinema, and enjoyable by audiences who could look both ways and see a good film coming.

Not that the number of awards is necessarily a guide, but the public ratings for this year’s films does show that there were some ‘good movies’ released this year from Australian filmmakers, notably The Proposition, Look Both Ways and Little Fish.

The narrow gauge of the IF Awards (and indeed all awards) restricts the amount of sophistication available to voters, and several other Australian films have missed out on the awards limelight. But that’s awards for you.

The SBS-televised awards (live from Sydney’s Luna Park) had its share of highlights, including Jack Thompson receiving the Freixenet Living Legend IF Award and playing on harmonica with Yothu Yindi’s Mandawuy Yonupingu.
