CITY OF ANGELS

SYNOPSIS:
Seth (Nicolas Cage) is an angel in the City of Angels. He lives a solitary life observing and offering comfort to humans about to die. He has no sense of touch, taste or smell. Then he meets Maggie Rice (Meg Ryan), a doctor passionate about saving the lives of her patients. He quickly falls in love with Maggie and is hopeful, when a patient (Denis Franz) reveals that he too was once an angel. But, once Seth relinquishes his immortality there's no going back, and will Maggie love him in return?

"There’s (not surprisingly) an ethereal quality about City of Angels, a dazzling romantic drama with exquisite performances from Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan. Greatly enhanced by John Seale’s fluid lens artistry, and Brad Silberling’s inspired direction, there is constantly the feeling of motion, that we are embarking on a journey of discovery.

The fierce close ups seem to magnify the intensity and depth of emotion throughout, while the intangible fragility is reflected in the music, with a beautiful soundtrack that varies from alluring guitar, celestial refrains to the works of Eric Clapton, Frank Sinatra and John Lee Hooker. Imaginatively conceived, with an economical script that exudes wit, humour and panache, the entire film breathes, sighs and whispers sensuality, polished by rich, glowing tones.

Time seems to stand still as we are captivated by a world inhabited by unseen angels and the ensuing implications. Nicolas Cage is extraordinary as the love-struck angel: he is intense and remote all at the same time. His yearnings and longings are captured in the heart, and his character leaves an indelible print.

Meg Ryan shows greater depth than ever before - ravishingly beautiful with depth of emotion to match, Ryan complements Cage perfectly, and their love scene is one of the most sensual, in terms of sight, sound and touch, in recent cinema.

Great casting with NYPD Blue’s Dennis Franz, who adds an extra dimension as the fallen angel. City of Angels is exquisite cinema."
