LOST HIGHWAY
SYNOPSIS:
A killer suffers from acute schizophrenia, living in his
own cracked world where time is dangerously out of control. The
killer’s splintering personality is explored graphically to
present the traumas of his parallel identity crisis. Seeing the
events unfold from within this mental state, the audience is
travelling on a journey that shows how the mind goes into hiding
when the horror of one’s actions become unbearable. Lynch
calls it "a psychogenic fugue".
"For me, Lost Highway is a return to the ambitions of the
French nouvelle vague of the early 60s, and in particular, to
Last Year in Marienbad. The two films have nothing in common
superficially, but both stretch the cinematic artform in an
adventurous way, suggesting rather than telling stories,
eschewing linear plot lines and playing with the very psyche of
the viewer. Satisfying on that level, the film is still too long,
but the experience is well worth it for anyone seriously
interested in a film that attempts to orchestrate the intellect
as well as the emotions. Quite impossible to explain, but
wonderful visually, and with striking performances from all,
especially Arquette, Pullman and Blake (remember Baretta?)."

"Described as a 21st century noir horror film,
Lost Highway is a terrifying, dark experience that gnaws in the
psyche. This reviewer found the highway a little too long, but
there are a lot of gripping and memorable elements. Performances
are haunting, especially that of Arquette, who brings a
compelling complexity to her roles. It is never a comfortable
film, and no doubt is intended to make you sweat as you travel
the long road. For David Lynch fans."
