URBAN CINEFILE CONTINUES AUDIENCE AWARDS AT 2006 SYDNEY FILM FESTIVAL

Following the inaugural presentation of the Urban Cinefile Audience Awards at the 2005 Sydney Film Festival, we are again sponsoring this new set of awards that honour the most popular features, documentaries and shorts in both the World Cinema and the Sidebar programs. Patrons of the festival are encouraged to rate every film they see after each screening, using the specially designed rating slips; all that’s required is a small tear indicating the rating out of 5.

Last year’s winner of the Best Feature Award in World Cinema, Brothers (Denmark), by Susanne Bier, is being released in cinemas this week (June 8, 2006), while the winner of the Best Documentary Award, Mad Hot Ballroom (USA), was released in Australia on March 15, 2006. (For more about these awards, see the special section on the Festival website.

The winner of the Best Feature in the Sidebar Program, Blacktown, was directed by Australian filmmaker Kriv Stenders, who says: "I guess this is really best kind of award a filmmaker can get - an audience award. It’s especially delicious for us, as Blacktown is a totally independent, handmade film created from nothing, for nothing - so an award like this certainly helps our cause. It's a brutal world out there in terms of film distribution and exhibition, and this award is a fantastic validation. On behalf of myself and the whole Blacktown team we'd like to thank Lynden Barber and the Sydney Film Festival for taking us on at such short notice. We would also like to thank Urban Cinefile for sponsoring the award and for supporting film culture in this country, and finally we'd like to give a big thank you to the audiences who came to see our little film and who voted for us. "

The Urban Cinefile Audience Awards, specially designed and inscribed for each winning film, are presented during the Closing Night ceremonies (June 24) at the Sydney Film Festival in Sydney’s State Theatre. The Festival runs June 9 – 25, 2006.
