25/6/2006: FAVELA RISING WINS FIPRESCI AWARD

The story of a Brasilian drug runner turned peaceful muso in Favela Rising, by Jeff Zimbalist and Matt Mochary, has won the international critics (FIPRESCI) jury prize at this year’s Sydney Film Festival.

Favela Rising is the story of charismatic Rio drug trafficker, Anderson Sa who turned his back on violence to preach a positive message in a musical form. The result is Afro Reggae, a band-cum-social movement playing a vibrant blend of samba, rock and hip-hop which encouraged the youth of the “favelas” to opt out of a life working for the drug lords. A tale that begins as heartbreaking turns into one of elation and hope as the community fights back against the local thugs.
