IF AWARDS 2006 - WINNERS

KENNY FLUSHED WITH SUCCESS
Considering that it is the year’s Australian box office champ, it’s no surprise that Kenny scored the IF Award for the year’s most popular film as rated by audiences around Australia (primarily at festivals); but Ten Canoes directors Rolf de Heer and Peter Djiggir were also honoured for their work, as were many of the creative team behind Suburban Mayhem, whose executive producer Jan Chapman, was presented with the SBS Living Legend Award. Andrew L. Urban reports from the Gold Coast.

Lured to the often lurid Gold Coast by a fat financial carrot from the Queensland Government, the If Awards, with a last minute naming rights sponsor under its belt (Hisense, Chinese home appliance maker), seems to have abandoned its hip and cool tone in favour of the more traditional copy-cat version of Oscar, with all the enthusiasm and clunkiness of a televised awards show. And what the Gold Coast Convention Centre lacks in panache or style or character it makes up for in dimensions and capacity.

There were a couple of highlight moments, including Phillip Noyce’s presentation of the Living Legend Award to his ex-wife Jan Chapman, with whom he has maintained cordial and professionally respectful relations; Rolf de Heer’s heartfelt tribute to his co-director, Peter Djigirr and Emily Barclay’s evident surprise by winning the Best Actress award, and her tribute to fellow nominees Laura Linney and Abbie Cornish. Notable, too by its surprise, Crusoe Kurddal winning the Best Actor award for his role in Ten Canoes. Sadly he wasn’t there to accept it.

Tropfest was named festival of the year by If Magazine, and Peter Templeman was presented the Rising Talent Award for his multi award winning short, Saviour, produced by Stuart Parkyn.

The awards count: Kenny 4, Ten Canoes 3, Suburban Mayhem 3, Kanyini 2. The presentation was televised on SBS and repeated on Showtime.
