VOLVER SWEEPS EUROPEAN FILM AWARDS 2006

Pedro Almodóvar’s Volver, winner of Best Script and Best Actresses (shared by all female cast) at Cannes this year, has swept the shelf of major prizes at the European Film Awards last weekend, with People’s Choice Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress (Penelope Cruz), Best Composer (Alberto Iglesias) and shared Best Cinematography (José Luis Alcaine) with The Wind That Shakes the Barley (Barry Ackroyd).

Roman Polanski was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award, while producer Jeremy Thomas received the award for European Achievement in World Cinema, the Prix Screen International Award.

Another Cannes entry, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s The Lives of Others, was awarded the Best Film & Best Script prizes by the jury, and its star, Ulrich Mühe, won the Best Actor award – his performance had the buzz at Cannes.
