BAFTA AWARDS 2007 - NOMINATIONS

A SHARE OF THE PRAISE FOR AUSSIES
George Millerís Happy Feet is nominated for Best Animation and for Best Music (John Powell), Mel Gibson and Bruce Daveyís Apocalypto is up for non-English language film honours, while two Australian actresses star in films nominated for Best Film: Cate Blanchett in Babel and Toni Collette in Little Miss Sunshine. But itís The Queen (with 10 nominations including Helen Mirren as Best Actress) which is expected to reign at the BAFTAs, to be presented February 11 at Londonís Royal Opera House.

Australian producers, actors and directors feature in honourable place on the list of nominees, including in one unexpected category: films made not in English. The Oscars (Americans being rather more self-centric) call them foreign language films, and it would be a delicious irony if Rolf de Heerís Ten Canoes is nominated in that category (to be announced Jan. 23) alongside Melís film.

And who will own up to disparaging Daniel Craig now that heís nominated alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Peter OíToole in the Best Actor stakes for his role as 007 in the revitalised James Bond franchise?

In the gong count after The Queen, itís Babel with seven, and The Departed with six; Prada and Pirates have five each.
