EX, THE (aka FAST TRACK)

SYNOPSIS:
Major changes are at hand for Tom Reilly (Zach Braff) and lawyer wife Sofia (Amanda Peet) after the birth of their baby. Until now, Sofia has been the main provider, but when she decides to be a full-time mother, Tom takes the family to Ohio to work for his father-in-law (Charles Grodin). It doesn't help that his boss Chip (Jason Bateman) still has a crush on Sofia from their high school days, or that he keeps stealing Tom's thunder. Dirty tricks and sabotage create an atmosphere of fierce paranoia, and Tom and Sofia's relationship is at risk.

Review by Robert Newton:
There's something about There's Something About Mary that makes people want to try to recapture the comedy's genie-in-a-bottle even 10 years later. This one, by one-time indie star Jesse Peretz is about a jobless soon-to-be dad (Zach Braff) trying to balance his new life working for his wife's father (Charles Grodin) with the fear of losing his wife (Amanda Peet) to her overachieving high school friend (Jason Bateman).

Peretz tries too wishfully to make the underdeveloped script by first-timers David Guion and Michael Handelman into more than it is, like the cast does with their notably earnest performances. Cut-ups like "SNL" yuksters Fred Armisen and Amy Poehler are misused, while veterans like Grodin are given center stage but precious little to do. Even on an off day, 80s king John Hughes nailed the modern angst of first-time fatherhood far better than this in She's Having A Baby.
