EUROPEAN FILM AWARDS 2007 – WINNERS

THE OLD NEW AND THE NEW NEW
The old new and the new new cinema of Europe were celebrated at this year’s European Film Awards held in Berlin (December 1) with old ‘new wave’ director Jean-Luc Godard receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award and ‘new’ Romanian director Cristian Mungiu winning the Best Film award with 4 Months 3 Weeks and 2 Days.

Cinema’s new wave of old in Jean-Luc Godard, and the old guard in Alain Resnais, along with the new guard in Cristian Mungiu were celebrated at this year’s awards in Berlin. Mingiu’s film also won the Palme d’Or in Cannes (released in Australia in October 2007), and Resnais won the Best Director Award at Venice, as well as the French Critics’ Award for Coeurs (opens in Australia this week, Dec. 6, 2007). You could also argue that the Audience Award to Giuseppe Tornatore’s noirish La Sconosciuta (The Unknown) represents the coming together of old and new European cinema, in a mystery thriller that is at once contemporary yet an homage to the tough, hard nosed work of the old guard in the 50s.

Clearly, European cinema is in pretty good artistic shape with a vibrant slate of films of which these winners are fine ambassadors.
