FCCA AWARDS 2007 – NOMINATIONS

NO PENGUINS HAVE BEEN RECOGNISED
Happy Feet won George Miller the AFI’s Global Achievement Award and the film took out the IF’s Box Office Award with its $31 million takings (not to mention an Oscar and a BAFTA for Best Animated Feature) but Australian film critics have not found any aspect of the film outstanding enough for a nomination or a special mention, reports Andrew L. Urban.

You could argue that Happy Feet doesn’t need acclaim from Australian film critics; but you could just as easily argue that Australian film critics need Happy Feet among their award nominations – somewhere – to avoid being labelled irrelevant. With the Melbourne group’s modest inaugural awards (just 4 awards) there may not have been room for Happy Feet, although I would have thought even a mention would have been wise. But for the Sydney based FCCA, with its longer history of awards and a larger infrastructure, Happy Feet offered an opportunity for the Circle to be seen as being aware of the ramifications of this film a product of the Australian production sector.

The omission was not a conspiracy to snub a high profile commercial film for being too mainstream, too unworthy of artistic acclaim. It was just an oversight; the FCCA executive did not consider the film for a special award, we are told, but in our view it should have taken steps to ensure that Happy Feet was somehow recognised.

The nominated films are all deserving; Happy Feet need not have displaced any of them. Perhaps a special award, something like Groundbreaking Animation or similar, could have been considered. The omission is especially ironic since one of the FCCA Awards sponsors, Animal Logic, was a production partner in Happy Feet and provided the digital grunt for the groundbreaking animation.
It's still not too late, of course; the presentation is on February 1 ...

The Film Critics Circle of Australia (FCCA) Awards will be presented on Friday 1 February, 2008, at Cinema Paris, Sydney hosted by Melbourne’s Paul Harris and actress Tina Bursill, followed by a cocktail function at the Bavarian Bier Cafι.

Tickets to the FCCA Awards are $35, and are available from fcca@optusnet.com.au
