KILLERS, THE (1946): DVD

SYNOPSIS:
'The Swede' (Burt Lancaster), a star-crossed boxer, is hunted by hired guns after he becomes infatuated with fickle femme fatale and gangsters' moll Kitty Collins (Ava Gardner). Insurance investigator Reardon (Edmond O'Brien) gets onto the case when The Swede's life insurance is left to his landlady who hardly knows him. Reardon traces The Swede's past connections to a gang led by Big Jim Colfax (Albert Dekker) which stole $250,000, but the money disappeared.

Review by Andrew L. Urban:
Nominated for four Oscars, Robert Siodmak's The Killers expands on Hemingway's short story in classic film noir style, with a dense plot that ends in an unexpected double cross. If the story is gripping, so are the performances, not the least Burt Lancaster in his debut (at age 33) as The Swede. The brooding intensity and the authority on screen are already fully formed in this remarkable actor.

Ava Gardner's luminous beauty is perfect for Woody Bredell's beautiful lighting work, fully realising the possibilities of B&W cinema. Edmond O'Brien is single minded and dynamic as the insurance investigator, while Albert Dekker makes a complex and manipulative crim.

Mikos Rozsa's Oscar nominated score drives the story and heightens the flashpoints, using a combination of orchestral and minimalist musical motifs to good effect.
