DAY OF WRATH: DVD

SYNOPSIS:
In a 17th-century Danish village, Marte (Anna Svierkier) is accused of witchcraft. In the shadow of her flight, capture, confession, and burning at the stake, Anne (Lisbeth Movin), the young wife of the town's aging pastor, Reverend Absalon Pedersson (Thorkild Roose), falls in love with the pastor's son, Martin (Preben Lerdorff Rye). Her confession of this illicit affair to her husband brings on his death. At his funeral, his mother Meret (Sigrid Neiiendam), denounces the widow as a witch.

Review by Andrew L. Urban:
Day of Wrath is a harrowing portrait of ideological persecution - the tragic consequences of a misdirected cruelty borne of intolerance and repression, wrote one critic, and I can't better that description for accuracy and insight. After making the film in Denmark during the Nazi occupation, Dreyer fled to Sweden - no doubt aware that the Nazis would recognise themselves as the modern equivalent of those misguided torturers.

Dreyer's precision proves highly effective in creating the film's mood of dark oppression, and every detail is perfectly in keeping with the film's tone - which often resembles a thriller. The ticking of an old grandfather clock can be heard in many scenes, even though it's barely seen. For whom does this bell toll ....

Anna Svierkier's heartbreaking performance as the old lady declared a witch, tortured and burnt to death launches the film. Dreyer contrasts this with bucolic scenes of fields and flowers, driving the impact harder, as Martin (Preben Lerdorff Rye) and his new step mother Anne (Lisbeth Movin), fall in love.
