ROSEBERY 7470: DVD

SYNOPSIS:
Alison (Alice Ansara), an autistic high-school dropout in a small Tasmanian town, is an incest survivor who has been warped by her mother's (Ann Ellison) twisted views. Her father (Roger Smith) suicides and her mother dies. She fantasizes about zombies and engages in an unwitting love triangle with her estranged sister Sophie (Sara Cooper) and her boyfriend Keith (John Chatwin) as she slowly looses her grip on reality and plunges into a world of nightmares and fantasy.

Review by Andrew L. Urban:
Images, colours, light/dark, layers, textures, shapes and sounds, more so than dialogue, are the tools that Stefan Popescu uses to infiltrate our consciousness with this absorbing but confronting film. And when there is dialogue, it's often mixed under the soundscape as if to signify it's of lesser importance. Popescu has an inventive mind and shows flair in creating images with simple optical effects to convey Alison's state of mind. Nothing derivative here.

Alice Ansara's unique screen presence helps create the edgy mood maintained throughout and the unsettling sound design works well as a subliminal device to maintain tension.

Avoiding the obvious in both storytelling structure and cinematic style, Popescu fashions a hanting work out of material that might have made a decent psychological thriller; be he wants more, and his experimentation earned him a Best Director award at the 2006 Melbourne Underground Film Festival, where Ansara also won an award, in the Best Actress category.
