"Why have an eight-year-old play an eight-year-old when we can have an actor of Tom's calibre, with all his years of experience, interpret the part? "  -- director Robert Zemeckis on using Tom Hanks play the boy as well as the guard in The Polar Express.

BAG BOY: DVD

SYNOPSIS:
Phil Piedmonstein (Paul Campbell) is a misguided grocery clerk whose quest is to be the No 1 grocery bagger. Amidst dealing with his colourful family and his short tempered boss (Dennis Farina), Phil has to prepare to win the International Bag-Off against the invincible Cliff 'The Windmill' Wynorski (Robert Hoffman) - and to also win the girl of his dreams, Bambi (Marika Dominczyk).

Review by Andrew L. Urban:
Who'd have thought that grocery bagging had enough in it to sustain a comedy for 90 minutes ... but that was before Bag Boy. And before the Bagging Championships which make up the climax; you'll never check out without a bagging thought again. The best, best things about Bag Boy is a script that is treated as drama, a cast that excels in deadpan humour and a dry, absurdist sense of fun. Of course, like all good comedy, it is built on dramatically serious material. Just twisted a bit.

Dennis Farina plays a hard boiled failure whose sport might have been boxing ... but it was bagging. Larry Miller is great as his narky opposite, and their two young charges, Phil (Paul Campbell) and Cliff (Robert Hoffman) are great foils for this rumbustious comedy. Marika Dominczyk is wonderful as the girl (with a bombshell secret) who falls for Phil and Mort Nathan's direction keeps the pace going without losing traction.

There is enough depth to the screenplay to keep us engaged, and Nathan manages to juggle the broad antics of Robert Hoffman and the straight, naturalist work of Farina and Campbell. This is definitely a disc to share with friends for getting the best out of the cumulative impact of the wacky comedy (with a juicy, schmaltzy ending).
