GREASE - 30TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION: DVD

SYNOPSIS:
It was a summer romance and Danny Zuko (John Travolta) and Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John) did not expect to see each other again. Danny goes back to Rydell High in his senior year, dons his leather-jacket to maintain his tough image as leader of the T-Birds, and starts to tell his friends Kenickie (Jeff Conaway), Doody (Barry Pearl), Sonny (Michael Tucci) and Putzie (Kelly Ward) about his summer vacation. Meanwhile Sandy meets the Pink Ladies: Rizzo (Stockard Channing), Frenchy (Didi Conn), Jan (Jamie Donnelly), and Marty (Dinah Manoff), and tells them about her beach romance. But when they meet again, their romance turns cold as Danny tries to live up to his tough-guy image... until true love finds its way.

Review by Louise Keller:
A magical success story of a musical, Grease is still the word even 30 years after its release in 1978, when Olivia Newton-John made her acting debut as a shy school girl, even though she was in fact 30 (Travolta, fresh from his Saturday Night Fever success, was six years younger). The combination of Newton-John and John Travolta was one of those fortuitous pairings that resonated with audiences everywhere.

This lively, fresh and bright musical classic returns in its 30th anniversary DVD edition, complete with sing-along track, commentary, deleted, extended and alternate scenes, interviews, featurettes and special introduction by director Randal Kleiser.

The story itself is as old as time itself as boy meets girl and spends the entire film working out their relationship. But it's how the revival of big-noting Danny (Travolta) and pretty-in-pink Sandy (Newton-John)'s summer romance is handled that charms us. It's upbeat and the songs are great - Grease, You're the One that I Want, Summer Nights, Greased Lightening and Hopelessly Devoted To You, some of which were written especially for the film (while others came from the stage show). We especially warm to the relationship between the girls (Stockard Channing is a knockout) as they share confidences and dreams. But it is Travolta who elevates the film, and that scene when Sandy makes her stunning transformation from wholesome Sandra Dee clone to leather-clad vamp in skin-tight black pants and stilettos, is one that will go down as one of the most memorable of its kind.

Everything works - the music, the dance routines, the relationships and the pizzazz. Get ready for a flash of Greased Lightning all over again.
