DIRTY MONEY: DVD

SYNOPSIS:
Paris nightclub owner, Simon (Richard Crenna) - secretly a thief - is a friend of Police Commissioner Edouard Coleman (Alain Delon) and his girlfriend, Cathy (Catherine Deneuve). Unbeknownst to the commissioner, Simon and three associates rob a small-town bank to fund a bigger heist, intercepting a drug run.

Review by Andrew L. Urban:
Jean-Pierre Melville was an accomplished filmmaker of films noir and heist movies by the time he made Dirty Money, and he knew some of the great tricks of the trade. For instance, he covers the main heist in a tension building 20-minute sequence shot pretty well in real time - just like Jules Dassin so famously did in his classic jewellery heist movie, Rififi, back in 1955. The parallels include a complicated approach and execution, in this case on a train.

The story is much more layered than the synopsis suggests, with a minor romantic subplot involving the gorgeous Catherine Deneuve as Cathy, a platinum blonde who has a soft spot for both Simon (Richard Crenna) and his good friend the police commissioner, Edouard (Alain Delon). This friendship, already tested by Cathy, is put under fatal pressure when Adouard finally discovers the truth about the heist.

But it's primarily a heist movie with noirish elements; the characters are all flawed and the settings include Simon's showgirl nightclub, where an attractive transvestite plays police informant and the melancholy music suits the mood.

Engaging and entertaining, Dirty Money - or Un flic as is the original title - has a classic charm about it: how else could a heist film with such moral lowpoints be rated PG?
