EUROPEAN FILM AWARDS 2008 - NOMINATIONS

AUSTRALIA GETS THE BEST
Three films already released in Australia are among the nominations for the European Film Award: Mike Leigh’s Happy-Go-Lucky, Juan Antonio Bayona’s The Orphanage and Ari Folman’s Waltz With Bashir; a fourth, Laurent Cantet’s The Class, is releasing in Australia on January 22, 2009. It goes to show Australia gets the best of foreign films.


Other nominations include Steve McQueen (Best Director) and Michael Fassbender (Best Actor) for Hunger, James McAvoy (Best Actor) for Atonement, Hiam Abass (Best Actress) for Lemon Tree, Belen Rueda (Best Actress) for The Orphanage and Kristin Scott Thomas (Best Actress) for I’ve Loved You So Long (Australian release: December 26, 2008.)

Three of the films seen here are up for the music award: Dario Marianelli for Atonement, Max Richter for Waltz With Bashir and Fernando Velázquez for The Orphanage.

The nominations for the 21st European Film Awards were announced last weekend at the Seville European Film Festival. The 1,800 European Film Academy members will now vote for the winners which will be presented during the Awards ceremony on December 6 in Copenhagen.
