MAKE IT HAPPEN: DVD

SYNOPSIS:
Lauryn (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a 21 year old from a tiny Indiana town, moves to Chicago with dreams of entering the Chicago School of Music and Dance. But after rejection and a series of misfortunes she finds herself working in a burlesque club. The club proves to be a place of conflict and self-discovery, helping Lauryn to realize that even though plans may change, dreams never do.

Review by Andrew L. Urban:
We know the trajectory, it's a question of how brightly the rocket burns and how interested we are in the astronauts aboard this dance missile from small town Indiana to Chicago Big Time Dance School. Of course, dance hopeful Lauryn (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is rejected, in just over 60 seconds. Winstead is instantly likeable and the story is neatly developed, with plenty of eye candy and a colourful palette. Sexy dancing starts in just under 20 minutes into the film, but stalls while we get Lauryn's back story during a late night chat with Russ (Riley Smith), the DJ at Ruby's where Lauryn is temping.

It's not till 37 minutes in that Lauryn gets that lucky brak at Ruby's these stories rely on - but of course, this is a burlesque club, not REAL dancing that she is after. With the support of her newfound friend Dana (terrific Tessa Thompson) and Russ,Lauryn of course finds a way. That's after fighting bitchy jealousy and bad luck. But the screenplay makes an effort to build a story and characters and interest, to put Lauryn's dancing ambition in context and the dance sequences in the third act more explosive.

There's plenty of heart in the story, with a dramatic subplot around Lauryn's tense relationship with her brother Joel (John Reardon) - and Darren Grant directs with a mix of drama and sensitivity. It's sexy, too.
