LUCKY 7: DVD
Amy (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) is a beautiful and successful lawyer intent on following the guidelines her mother left her before she died when Amy was only 7 years old. Boyfriend Number 7 is supposed to be the Real Deal, but when Amy meets Daniel (Brad Rowe), who is perfect for her in every way, she is in a panic, because he is only her 6th boyfriend. Amy decides to find an interim boyfriend, who she can label number 6, so the 7th spot is saved for Daniel, and finds Peter (Patrick Dempsey), the manager of a bagel shop she frequents.
Review by Louise Keller:
It's predictable but nicely so, this engaging romantic comedy with compelling leads that reminds us of the value of spontaneity. Kimberly Williams-Paisley and Patrick Dempsey are unlikely lovers who become the perfect match in Lucky 7, a made for television rom-com in which a make-believe weekend becomes the basis for a credible future.
Williams-Paisley's Amy was only 7 years old when her mother died, but the successful young lawyer kept her guiding timeline as a reassurance for the most important events of her life. When we first meet the grown up Amy, she has just broken up with her 5th boyfriend. Enter Daniel (Brad Rowe), who she meets at the tennis club, when waiting for a blind date. 'He's the one: he's perfect,' says her Dad. There are even fireworks when they kiss for the first time and Amy is convinced that her fate is sealed. But her obsession with her mother's timeline plays with her mind, prompting Amy to accept the invitation from the bagel-shop guy Peter (Patrick Dempsey) to be his date at an out of town wedding.
Of course we know from the outset that Peter and Amy are perfect for each other, when they set out together on the ferry to take them to their out of town destination. For once, there's a spontaneity to the events that Amy has never had before as they play croquet and go kayaking together. She even tells him something she hasn't ever told anyone else about - that she hates her job. They hold hands for show and make up stories about their first date for Peter's friends; when he says 'who says we won't last?' as they kiss in the moonlight and fall into bed together, it is clear that make believe has turned into the real thing.
There are ups and downs as the relationship works itself out, but we are never in any doubt as to the outcome. The two leads exude plenty of chemistry as their relationship goes from cold to hot. It's hard to define what is Dempsey's appeal, but it is there in sparkling colour as cupid shoots its arrows and Lucky 7 is The One.
