WITNESS TO MURDER: DVD

SYNOPSIS:
Laura Cooper (Kelly Rutherford) is a struggling suburban divorcee whose 15 year old daughter Sam (Kirsten Prout) blames her for the divorce and the two live in a tense silence. But when Sam accidentally witnesses the school bully, son of a police chief Bates (Eric Keenleyside), Jordan Bates (Jesse Moss) murder his best friend Alex (Aidan Kahn) at a party, she finds herself in over her head. She learns that Alex was silenced before he could confess to a terrible crime that he and Jordan committed against Sam's best friend Tori (Andrea Whitburn). Jordan threatens to kill Sam and anyone she tells about his dark secrets. When Sam is framed by Jordan and jailed for drug possession, she finally tells her mom everything she knows. Desperate to prove her daughter's innocence, Laura launches a dangerous investigation, racing against time to uncover the evidence that will bring Jordan to justice.

Review by Andrew L. Urban:
Little known in Australia, but a busy TV actress in the US, Kelly Rutherford squeezed in this telemovie between doing 21 episodes of E-Ring and 35 episodes of Gossip Girl, for equally busy TV producer Harvey Kahn. Rutherford is joined by an accomplished cast, including Kirsten Prout who plays her daughter Sam - a terrific and demanding performance, requiring her to handle some hefty emotional scenes. Jesse Moss plays the nasty teenager manipulating his little gang into evil territory. Especially well written and directed is the confrontation between him and his police chief dad (Eric Keenleyside).

Andrea Whitburn is great as Sam's friend, Tori, who plays a key role in the drama and David Pearson is effective as the car mechanic whose son Derek (Jesse Haddock) hangs around with bad boy Jordan.

Although the screenplay is a little far fetched insofar as Jordan's capacity for evil, but it hangs together in every other department and the direction is focused. The story is strong and well told, building tension in the final act, delivering a satisfying payoff.
