FAR NORTH: DVD

SYNOPSIS:
Haunted by a violent past, Savia (Michelle Yeoh) and Anja (Michelle Krusiec) share an isolated, brutal existence in the desolate Artic tundra. When Loki (Sean Bean), a wounded stranger, enters their lives, a romance quickly develops between Loki and Savia - and the betrayal that follows leads to shocking and bloody consequences.

Review by Andrew L. Urban:
Screened at the Venice film festival in 2007, Far North is beautiful to look at, in that icy exotic way of the remote polar wilderness at the upper end of Norway, but cute it ain't. For a start, it doesn't seem to be actually Norway but a land with an oppressive military, as we learn from Loki (Sean Bean). This is one tough and confronting film, its beauty only adding to the shock value. Michelle Yeoh is superb as Savia, who has raised Anja (Michelle Krusiec) since infancy after saving her life. They live to survive, alone and isolated; just as Savia likes it. Said by a shaman to be cursed from birth, condemned to bring harm to anyone foolish enough to get close to her; Savia carries this information with her like a diseased necklace.

Savia is tough but not without humour or compassion; Yeoh is perfectly cast and carries the movie's dramatic thread with a mix of mystery and strength. Krusiec and Bean are also good, and the story engages with its unusual scenario and edgy mood.

Beautifully photographed, Roman Osin has wonderful landscape to work with, and he makes the most of the exteriors - and shows he can also light difficult interiors with sensitivity and creativity. Dario Marianelli's score is evocative and textured, and the production design is pitch perfect.
