BECK - THE MAN WITH NO FACE: DVD

SYNOPSIS:
A man is found dead, stabbed to death with a knife. The shocking thing is that his face has been removed. After questioning his wife who describes the marriage as a happy one, Inspector Martin Beck (Peter Haber) learns that a mysterious foreign man knocked on their door the day before the murder.

Review by Andrew L. Urban:
This is the second movie in the 4-film double disc, and works well after the first, Revenge. Not that it's a sequel, but it follows the events and the characters from Revenge, including a subplot about a junior female on the team. But the main game is a murder with mysterious elements. The structure is designed to keep us glued: an alarm salesman is murdered, and his face cut off. But the best part of the Beck series is the way we can follow the investigation, along with Inspector Martin Beck (Peter Haber) and his team. Oh, and his superior, Margareta (Marie Goranzon), reminiscent of Judy Dench's M in the James Bond movies of late.

The script touches on socio-political friction with Muslims, in a story that involves honour killings for marital infidelity. But nothing is quite as we expect, as the trail leads to unexpected discoveries.

It's a superb cast, confidently handled by director Harald Hamrell, with some emotional milestones amidst the police procedures. The strength of the Back scripts is their humanity and their care for detail. The frailty of human nature is carefully examined in the context of crime: it's much more about who and why than about chases and gunfights. Given the calibre of the writing and the cast, it's not surprising that we are hooked from the start.
