MARS ATTACKS!
SYNOPSIS:
Inspired by the popular Topps trading card series, the film is a
funky, spoofy alien invasion story, as the US citizens defend
themselves against a Martian invasion of the earth. There is also
love, grotesqueness and wholesale craziness at large.
Review by Andrew L. Urban: I wish the first half were funnier,
faster and funkier, because this is the best of Burton in
wired-up-and-go-for-broke mode in the second half. His casting is
80% of the value, but there are moments of genuine comedic genius
here. Only moments, and strung together by bouts of
labour…still, I’d recommend it as a Saturday afternoon
joyride. The technical achievement, so essential to the
suspension of cynicism and reality, is outstanding. A must for
anyone involved in the digital world. (Isn’t that all of
us?)
Review by Louise Keller: Galactic hoards of fun, but slightly
disappointing bubble-gum sci-fi flic. In the making, it probably
sounded better than the final result, despite an
out-of-this-world star-studded cast and many surprises. Great
effects, and it is good to see the Martians portrayed somewhat as
we recall them from childhood - as small green men, or variations
thereof. Lots of laughs, and the more off-beat your sense of
humour, the more you will get out of this latest Tim Burton
offering.
