YOU INSTEAD

SYNOPSIS:
After an altercation between two rock groups arriving at a large music festival in the Scottish countryside, Adam (Luke Treadaway) from one group and Morello (Natalia Tena) from another, are promptly handcuffed together by a site manager in a bid to maintain order. Then he disappears. The feuding couple face a number of challenging situations - not to mention curious partners Lake (Ruta Gedmintas) and Mike (Gavin Mitchell) - as they look to find a way to unchain themselves from each other and do their gigs, live their lives. But things keep changing ....

Review by Andrew L. Urban:
Trudging through the muddy fields while music blares from the stage, the massive crowd is unaware that two of the leads from different bands are handcuffed together and desperate to find the man with the key or some drastic solution - before their respective gigs. But that's only the start; their respective partners are another complicating factor in this rowdy and energetic contempo romantic comedy.

But when Adam (Luke Treadaway) gets to tag along by handcuff and joins Morello (Natalia Tena) on her set, things go so well on stage he decides it's not so bad a thing after all. Together with their assorted friends, they welcome the night and share drinks and amusement park rides while the music festival roars on.

The setting of a huge music festival adds to the film's sense of edgy nervous energy and the music provides a constantly heaving platform.

Unlike most romantic comedies in which the couple-to-be are constantly kept apart, in You Instead they are literally cuffed together. It's an interesting inversion and thanks to the excellent leads, it works a treat. Natalia Tena is a ball of energy, a feisty and irreverent young woman with an open face and big eyes which she uses well.

Treadaway is an unlikely romantic lead but pulls it off with a laid back approach. Their respective partners are solid and the other supports provide lively and naturalistic back up. The screenplay may be a bit simplistic but it's heartfelt and the energy pulls it through. And when you think it's over and just petering out, they pull you right back in.
