MADAGASCAR 3: EUROPE'S MOST WANTED
Alex (voice of Ben Stiller), Marty (Chris Rock), Gloria (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Melman (David Schwimmer) are still fighting to get home to their beloved Big Apple. Their journey takes them through Europe where they find the perfect cover: a traveling circus, which they reinvent - Madagascar style.
Review by Louise Keller:
A vivacious 3D kaleidoscope of colour, dazzle and show, this third in the franchise simply bursts with joie de vivre, goofy humour and innovative ideas as its central endearing characters join the circus. Fast paced with non-stop action and an elastic display of genuine fun the whole family will enjoy, there's a change of scenery this time, as the vast plains of Africa are replaced by a European circus folly, passing through Monte Carlo, Rome, Switzerland and London to its ultimate destination of New York, where the first adventure began. The stunning visuals are guaranteed to amuse the youngsters while incongruities and snappy dialogue will make parents glad they made the trip.
Alex (Ben Stiller), the lion addicted to hair conditioner, Marty (Chris Rock) the zebra whose big moment comes when catapulted from a canon in the Swiss Alps and Melman (David Schwimmer) the giraffe who is sweet on the rotund hippo Gloria (Jada Pinkett Smith), begin their big adventure by hopping, skipping and swimming to glitzy Monte Carlo, where mayhem and chaos ensues in its grand casino.
With chimps disguised as the wigged King of Versailles, scheming penguins and a mischievous lima that falls for a tutu-wearing ballerina bear, the stage is set for a riotous good time. When the animals join the circus, we meet a borscht-eating Russian knife throwing tiger with a secret fear, a shapely jaguar (Jessica Chastain), destined to become a trapeze partner for Alex and an endearing sea-lion who blubbers his way into our hearts.
The film is crammed with absurd notions like the zebra and hippo dancing together on a tightrope, or the zebra soaring through a multi-coloured rainbow in the clouds leaving a trail of hearts and smiles. The villain of the piece is played by Frances McDormand as the manic, lion-obsessed French animal-control chief Chantel DuBois, who sniffs scents with nose to the ground like a bloodhound and sings Edith Piaf's No Regrets, mascara pouring down her cheeks.
Laughter, song, dance and innovation melds naturally with the execution of this joyous, colourful splash of entertainment that is as enjoyable as it is sharp.
