OSCARS 2013 – NOMINATIONS

The film most likely (and perhaps most deserving) to win the 85th Best Picture Oscar – Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln (opens in Australia Feb. 7, 2013) – has 12 nominations, but is challenged by a strong field including Argo, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Django Unchained (opens Jan. 24) and Zero Dark Thirty (opens Jan. 31). We’ll know on Monday, Feb. 25 (Sydney time), says Andrew L. Urban.

The only real surprise at this year’s Oscar nominations announcement is that over 400 media types were present for the 5.38 am announcement in Beverly Hills, a Los Angeles suburb – an alcohol-free dawn event.

As expected, Australians Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts and yes, Jacki Weaver are nominees; Weaver picked up the slot held by Judi Dench in the BAFTAs. Likewise, Javier Bardem’s BAFTA slot in the supporting actor category (for UK film Skyfall) was taken by Robert De Nero (for Silver Linings Playbook). As for leading actress, Helen Mirren’s BAFTA slot (for Hitchcock, a UK film) was taken by Naomi Watts (for The Impossible, a Spanish-made English language film). The only other difference is that the BAFTAs nominated Ben Affleck for best actor in Argo, whereas the Oscars have Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook) in his place.

Official Academy members-only screenings of all nominated films will begin on Saturday, January 19; all active members are eligible to vote in all categories.
