OSCARS 2013 - WINNERS: ARGOABLY THE BEST

The big 8 Oscars go to 7 different homes, but it’s Ben Affleck’s mantelpiece that carries the Best Picture trophy for Argo, which has also won the Golden Globes and BAFTA gold statuettes. Andrew L. Urban reports.

In a superbly produced and designed Oscar show which even crossed live to the White House for Michelle Obama’s intro to the Best Picture announcement, the 85th Academy Awards were dotted about the nominations, reflecting the high standards of this year’s crop. A hair’s breadth differentiated winners from runners up, with Argo winning the Best Picture, Ang Lee the Best Director for Life of Pi, Daniel Day-Lewis for Best Actor in Lincoln, Jennifer Lawrence named Best Actress in Silver Linings Playbook, Christoph Waltz as Best Supporting Actor in Django Unchained (which also won Quentin Tarantino the Best Original Screenplay Oscar) and Anne Hathaway as Best Supporting Actress in Les Miserables.

Day-Lewis made history winning his third Best Actor Oscar, while 9 year old Quvenzhane Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) was the youngest Best Actress nominee – and 90 year old Emmanuelle Riva (Amour) the oldest.

Highlights of the show included a tribute to musicals, with Catherine Zeta Jones performing All That Jazz from Chicago, the cast from les Miserable singing One More Day, a James Bond tribute headlined by Dame Shirley Bassey performing the Goldfinger title song and a rare live performance of The Way we Were by Barbra Streisand, as tribute to Marvyn Hamlish who died last year.

William Shatner turned up from the future in his Star Trek character on a screen above the stage, to conduct a comedy rotuine with Seth McFarlane who turned out to be a terrific host, with a cool sense of humour and effortless delivery.
