Young Mary Katherine - M.K. - (voice of Amanda Seyfried) returns to her eccentric scientist father's (Jason Sudeikis) home, but his all-consuming search for a tiny civilisation he believes exists in the neighbouring forest drives them apart. However, M.K. stumbles onto the tiny Queen Tara (Beyoncé Knowles), after she is mortally wounded by the putrefying Boggans and Tara shrinks M.K. and begs her to help deliver the chosen pod bearing the new Queen to safety. Together with veteran Leafman warrior Ronin (Colin Farrell), two goofy mollusks (Aziz Ansari, Chris O'Dowd) and a young maverick, Nod (Josh Hutcherson), M.K. agrees to help. As the villainous Boggan leader, Mandrake (Christoph Waltz) closes in, M.K. and her new friends must work together and discover what they have to do to save their world.
Review by Andrew L. Urban:
When the teenage M.K. (Seyfried) returns to her dad's home in the woods to try and mend their relationship, he is still the preoccupied Professor Bomba (Sudeikis) convinced there is a tiny civilisation hidden in the nearby forest - and half ignoring her, he won't stop looking for it, using webcams, helmet-goggles and other devices.
Exasperated, she is about to leave again, when their three legged dog, Ozzie, runs off and she goes after him. That's when she stumbles on the tiny Queen Tara (Knowles), after she is mortally wounded by the putrefying Boggans (extreme versions of suburban bogans, perhaps?), led by evil Mandrake (Waltz). Tara shrinks M.K. and begs her to help deliver the chosen pod bearing the new Queen to safety and thus save the forest from being destroyed by Mandrak's forces.
A fantasy forest is a fabulous setting for animation; it is filled with all shapes and sizes and colours of flowers and animals, such as the two comic buddies, the snail Grub (Chris O'Dowd) and the slug Mub (Aziz Ansari). They are indispensable to help keep the all important pod nice and moist.
Sweet and funny and sometimes exciting, Epic is a cleverly made visual delight, certain to keep younger kids entertained.
