MCELROY, JIM – CHASING THE CROWD WITH ZEBRAS
Crowdfunding is moving into the mainstream, with Australian producer Jim McElroy seeking almost $1 million from the general public to help finance his next feature film, the $10 million drama, Zebras, written by David Williamson, to be directed by Bruce Beresford, starring Luke Hemsworth and Bruce Greenwood. Andrew L. Urban reports talked to Jim on Skype the day Kick Starter launched the Zebras campaign.
The Kick Starter campaign was launched on Wednesday, January 22, 2014, aiming to raise $900,000. Zebras is the true story of a soccer team with heart. In South Africa in 1983 Paul Krige a champion footballer and record executive, defies the establishment when he coaches a multi racial team…to victory.
By contributing as little as $10 to the making of the film, supporters will receive their very own copy of the movie script, and for $35 they will receive both a copy of the script and the finished film. Those with deeper pockets can bag themselves a speaking role in the film for just $8,000 or the opportunity to have their name included on screen during the film for $2,000. All proceeds raised will go towards the production of the film and supplementing the funding from State and Federal Agencies and rebates in Australia and South Africa.
Jim McElroy says “Crowdfunding has traditionally been utilised by emerging artists and filmmakers, however the Australian film landscape is rapidly evolving and we believe that established filmmakers must adapt and make use of all avenues to get projects off the ground. Aside from raising funds, we believe that the crowdfunding model offers a unique opportunity to connect directly with the audience and get them involved, which is invaluable.”
Zebras is scheduled for pre-production in June 2014 and will be distributed in Australia by Pinnacle Films and sold worldwide by Arclight Films.
