TO DIE FOR

SYNOPSIS:
Suzanne Stone (Nicole Kidman) is an aspiring TV personality who will do anything to be in the spotlight - including enlisting the help of three teenagers, Jimmy (Joaquin Phoenix), Russell (Casey Affleck) and Lydia (Alison Folland), to kill her husband (Matt Dillon). What she lacks in intelligence, she makes up for in cold determination and diabolical wiles. As she pursues her goal with relentless focus, she is forced to destroy anything and anyone that may stand in her way, regardless of the means or the ultimate cost.

"To Die For is Nicole Kidman's movie. Superb as the ruthlessly ambitious would-be TV broadcaster, Kidman weaves a multitude of detailed character traits. Allowing us to see the transparency of her feelings, the beauty of this performance as an obsessed self-centred career woman. She is alluring, striking and totally captivating. A strong powerful script propels the action, although elements of the murder conspiracy don't always work. The entire cast is terrific - Dillon perfect as the dull husband, Phoenix delightfully gauche and short of grey matter. A satisfying satire with black overtones, To Die For, is riveting cinema, an engrossing journey into a world where centre stage is the target."
Louise Keller

"Having spent a few years playing thankless roles in mainstream Hollywood, Nicole Kidman finally proved that she had talent, as the overly ambitious weather girl, and Gus van Sant, in his pre-Psycho mode, also proved how adept he is. To Die For is a fascinating and eerily unforgettable black comedy, which so beautifully satirises fame and power. Deliciously funny yet smugly self-satisfying, To Die For is a perfect concoction that proves that American cinema is capable of taking risks, and with this audacious gem, it goes all the way. Beautifully structured in a non-linear fashion, the films looks wonderful, and apart from Kidman's brilliant performance, and the wonderful surprise work from co-star Matt Dillon, To Die For is an assured and intelligent piece that goes against the grain."
