CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2: DVD

SYNOPSIS:
Flint Lockwood (voice of Bill Hader) now works at The Live Corp Company for his idol Chester V (Will Forte). But he's forced to leave his post when he learns that his most infamous machine is still operational and is churning out menacing food-animal hybrids.

Review by Louise Keller:
Visually extraordinary, this rainbow-coloured 3D animated sequel set in an eco system of living food, is as whimsical as the original 2009 film, even though its plot is lumpy enough to cause indigestion. What's wonderful is the filmmakers' sheer innovation with galloping bananas, elephantine watermelons, flower-eating shallots and a giant taco spewing its filling as it races on capsicum legs. There are sardine-eating cucumbers, a cheese burger with leg fries that tilts over for a bun-rub and a green-eyed, plump red strawberry with teeny arms and feet and a tangible soul.

Based on Judi Barrett's 1978 children's book, the screenwriters might have been well advised to concoct a new story rather than rely on following on from the original story in which the nerdy young inventor Flint (Bill Hader) devises a gadget that turns water into food. This time around, Flint's idol Chester V (Will Forte), complete with an army of holograms in his own image, recruits the star-struck inventor for his own greedy, evil objectives. While the visuals remain eye-poppingly good and the characters endearing, as a result of the overly complex plot, the key relationships between Flint, his TV weather-girl Sam (Anna Faris), his mono-brow father Tim (James Caan) and Steve the money (Neil Patrick Harris) lack that extra spark.

There is plenty to compensate though in terms of visuals, including a family of friendly marshmallows with smiley faces, talking and talking pizzas, a syrup marsh filled with flapjacks and umpteen other foodimals. Quips like 'There's a leek in my boat' fly quicker than you can catch them and even rather corny lines like 'How do you make a gorilla stew? Keep it waiting a couple of hours' work a treat. The moral is to make the world a better place and although the saccharine world portrayed may not spell sound nutrition, there is enough to stimulate and feed the sensory glands, leaving us well fed and genuinely uplifted.
