BEYOND THE EDGE 3D

SYNOPSIS:
Tenzing Norgay (Sonam Sherpa) and Edmund Hillary (Chad Moffitt) achieve the (almost) impossible with their monumental and historical ascent of Mt. Everest in 1953.

Review by Andrew L. Urban:
Using re-enactment techniques together with archival footage, Leanne Pooley has literally assembled a film of great interest, using cinema as binoculars into the past. The seamless merging of past and present footage is both disconcerting and revealing. What the film achieves best is the sense of being there, when we weren't. when Hillary and Norgay made their death defying lunge for the summit, they barely had enough oxygen let alone a movie camera to record it.

Pooley has been careful to avoid triumphalism to overtake her good taste, given that Hillary is a New Zealand hero and Norgay is not.

This climb took place in 1953 and recordings exist of post-summit interviews and subsequent material, such as Hillary's son Peter, speaking about his father. The job of putting it all together in a meaningful and cinematically valuable way must have been challenging.

A couple of shots remain burned into memory: one is a zoom out from the ledge below the summit prior to their final assault, showing the insignificance of their presence amidst the massive grandeur of the Himalayas. The other is the recreation of the summit moment itself.
