ROVER, THE: DVD

SYNOPSIS: 10 years after a global economic collapse, a hardened loner (Guy Pearce) pursues the men who stole his only possession, his car. Along the way, he captures one of the thieves' brother (Robert Pattinson), and the duo form an uneasy bond during the dangerous journey.

Review by Andrew L. Urban:
Artistic craftsmanship and dramatic tension saturate every scene in this dryly understated post-apocalyptic thriller. David Michod creates an eerily still landscape set 10 years after 'the collapse' - long enough to change people, to make them less assured and more reliant on primitive instinct, but not long enough to have broken down all the structures of society.

Sensationally contrasting characters and stunning performances from Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson hold us in their grip as they undertake a journey that ends in the kind of resolution that will linger in the annals of cinema. Pattinson's troubled, half witted Rey is a revelation; this role will open many new doors for him. Pearce, already known for his range, does something new here, too, something that comes from deep inside him, a volcanic pain that we only glimpse, yet it's enough to answer the questions raised early in the film.

There are countless moments to relish, either for their quiet but powerful cinematic flourish or for their dramatic sinew. Michod avoids the trap to build pace in search of thriller moments, letting the slow burn that is reflected in Antony Partos' exceptional score do its dark magic.

It's best to know little about the film's plot but I can assure you of its satisfaction rating.
