SPONGEBOB MOVIE, THE: SPONGE OUT OF WATER 3D

SYNOPSIS: Life in Bikini Bottom is going swimmingly for eternal optimist SpongeBob (Tom Kenny) and his friends: loyal starfish Patrick (Bill Fagerbakke), the sardonic Squidward (Rodger Bumpass), scientist squirrel Sandy (Carolyn Lawrence) and crustacean capitalist, Mr. Krabs (Clancy Brown). When the top-secret recipe for Krabby Patties is stolen, eternal adversaries SpongeBob and Plankton (Mr. Lawrence) must join forces on a trip through time and space to harness their internal super powers and battle fiendish pirate Burger Beard (Antonio Banderas) with his own plans for the delicious delicacies.

Review by Louise Keller:
In praise of teamwork, this second SpongeBob movie in 3D with its combo of adorable animated characters and integrated live action is bright, amusing, clever, na•ve and hugely inventive. It's goofy and smart and although there is nothing to match the unforgettable pink starfish in fishnets of the 2004 movie or indeed, David Hasselhoff rising from the sea like a sun-kissed god, highlights this time around include dancing seagulls, raining fries and pickles and the turning of the diminutive plankton into an incredible hulk.

Based on the Nickelodeon television characters, the new adventure includes time travel, a trip through SpongeBob's candy brain, a ride in the mouth of an intergalactic porpoise and a villainous pirate (played with glee by Antonio Banderas) who is keen to write his own ending to the story. But try as it might, there's a slight disconnect between the animation and live action. The strength of the film lies in the quirky animated characters and the myriad of sophisticated nuances.

The action is fast and there is constantly something new to grab our interest. I like the little touches - like the lisping seagull, the squid that leaks ink when he's nervous and the unexpected planetary collision after the porpoise takes his first bathroom break for 10,000 years.

Although the title suggests otherwise, most of the film takes place in the underwater location of Bikini Bottom, where the famous Krabby Patty burger is the popular and staple diet for all the workers. SpongeBob is the loyal employee who loves his job cooking the burgers. The stealing of the secret recipe by the mono-browed, single-eyed diminutive Plankton who wants to improve business of his failing restaurant, is the catalyst for change, resulting in an apocalyptic landscape.

Happy fun for all ages.
