CANNES 2015 – OFFICIAL SELECTION

It won’t be Australian director Justin Kurzel of Snowtown (2011) fame who will be flashbulbed close to death on the Red Carpet but his two Macbeth stars, Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, the latter in her darkest role as Lady Macbeth (with a French accent perhaps). As will Cate Blanchett, who stars in the title role of Carol in Todd Haynes’ screen version of Patricia Highsmith’s novel, The Price of Salt.

Macbeth

While those two films with Australian connections are in Competition, just as much anticipation surrounds the Out of Competition world premiere of George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road, starring Tom Hardy as Max, after a furious shoot with some personality clashes reported.

For the first time in the history of the Festival de Cannes, a film by a female director will open the Festival: La Tête Haute, by French filmmaker Emmanuelle Bercot, tells the story of a juvenile delinquent, Malony, and his upbringing from childhood to adulthood, as a children's judge and social worker try to save him.

And there is a second film by a female director in the official program, this one in Competition: Mon Roi, by Maiwenn.

Asia, Italy and Hungary are also represented, joining veterans such as America’s Gus Van Sant and France’s Jacques Audiard.

Mad Max: Fury Road

The Official Selection of the 68th Festival de Cannes was announced on April 16, 2015 at a press conference held by Pierre Lescure and Thierry Frémaux in Paris.
