FINGERFACE: VOD

SYNOPSIS: An ordinary guy falls in love with his dream girl and then meets her in real life.

Review by Andrew L. Urban:
Winner of the Best Screenplay award at the 2015 Sydney Indie Film Festival, Fingerface is certainly unique, with the 'stars' comprising Andrew Dawson's fingertips playing all the parts, crudely marked in childish face paintings. It's an inventive exercise in no-budget filmmaking, where the 'sets' comprise drawings on lined paper.

There is Giles and Stephanie and Gemma ... all fingerface people. And there is an underscore, Giles playing guitar, and a weird storyline about Giles and his quest for love ... and Somalian pirates who apparently killed his parents. This takes us into (even more) surreal territory. And a raft trip on the Indian Ocean, which ends on an island inhabited by an alcohol-avoiding cult.

The screenplay award reflects the film's na•ve style and simple boy meets girl premise, with a tongue in cheek and cheeky dialogue. There is even kissing and sex, and it's the film's charming conceit that the audience will go along and allow imagination to supply that which his budget couldn't. There are some good ideas, but with the limitations of the production and a languid pace, it loses its edginess and could use a tough hearted editor with sharp scissors. It just can't sustain interest.

Dawson made the film over many laborious hours on his own while living in a small town in Poland, where he had moved to teach English. That makes sense.
