GOOD DINOSAUR, THE

SYNOPSIS: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? In this epic journey into the world of dinosaurs, an Apatosaurus named Arlo (Raymond Ochoa) makes an unlikely human friend. While traveling through a harsh and mysterious landscape, Arlo learns the power of confronting his fears and discovers what he is truly capable of.

Review by Louise Keller:
It plays a little long, but the visuals are spectacular in Pixar's holiday film about family and overcoming fear. It's a curious blend of coming of age story, buddy movie and mid west adventure - the two key characters being a dinosaur and a little boy. Five writers are credited for the story that Inside Out screenwriter Meg LeFrauve, has woven into a screenplay although this time there is none of the innovation shown in the latter. Told from the dinosaur's perspective in an alternative universe, the film canvasses the struggles of Arlo, the young misfit dinosaur before embarking on the road trip and adventure in which the relationship between Arlo and the unruly boy Spot is developed.

After a brief prologue, we are there when Arlo (voiced by Raymond Ochoa) and his two older siblings are hatched. From the start, Arlo is nervous and fearful, unable to earn his mark alongside the rest of his family. There is a lack of pace during the development of the relationship between Arlo and Spot, a mischievous little 'critter' with a shock of hair who clambers about on all fours and only makes primitive noises to communicate. It is not until Arlo is lost, far from home and the two have to depend on each other, that the momentum lifts.

Highlights include the scene when Poppa (voiced by Jeffrey Wright) shows Arlo the illuminated fireflies in the cornfield at night and my favourite scene is the one when a family of travelling dinosaurs compare scars and stories y the campfire at night. Visually, there is plenty going on with Arlo and Spot encountering an assortment of birds and beasts amid rain, lightening and dust storms as they battle the odds and make their way home.
