CUT BANK: DVD

SYNOPSIS: Dwayne McLaren (Liam Hemsworth) dreams about escaping small town life in Cut Bank, Montana, 'the coldest spot in the nation,' with his vivacious girlfriend Cassandra (Teresa Palmer). When Dwayne witnesses an awful crime, he tries to leverage a bad situation into a scheme to get rich quickly but he finds that fate and an unruly accomplice are working against him. Thrust into the middle of a police investigation spearheaded by the local sheriff (John Malkovich), everything goes from bad to worse.

Review by Andrew L. Urban:
Petty crims in small town stumble into mayhem, a genre made popular by the Coen brothers with Fargo, is a terrific addition to the thriller sub genre list, and Cut Bank is a gripping, entertaining addition to that list. Like Fargo, Cut Bank (proudly the coldest spot in the US of A) is out in the sticks and like Fargo, one bad thing leads to many more, in a controlled escalation that is at once dark and dramatic. It's a terrific script and the film deserves a theatrical release and lots of paying cinema-going customers. Still, better on DVD and Blu-ray than not being available here at all.

Best not to talk (or write) too much about the story because the plot revelations coming with relentless frequency give the film its delicious tone and hard edge.

The casting of every character is flawless, the pace controlled and the technical aspects all adding to a tension-filled 90-odd minutes well worth the time.

The leads are all remarkable character actors, even young Liam Hemsworth, mixing it with the veterans Bruce Dern, John Malkovich and Billy Bob Thornton. One of the top films I've seen this year.
