HITCHCOCK FESTIVAL 2016 AT ORPHEUM –‘FINALLY!’

‘My Own Film Festival – Finally!’ as Alfred Hitchcock is portrayed with a superior grimace, seen holding the sign. It’s an apt quote, even if the old wizard didn’t say so from his grave. But we can believe he would if he could. The Festival, July 21 – August 10, at Sydney’s Cremorne Orpheum, will screen 15 of the master’s films, including his classics Psycho, Vertigo, Rear Window, North By Northwest and Dial M For Murder.

Rebecca, starring Laurence Olivier, Joan Fontaine, Judith Anderson

Orpheum Cinemas’ General Manager, Programming Director and film historian Paul Dravet curated the ALFRED HITCHCOCK RETRO FILM FESTIVAL and says it is long overdue.

“There are two things that have long staggered me about Alfred Hitchcock. One is that he never received a Best Director Oscar, and the other is the fact that there has not been a public festival of his films ever in Australia. I can’t do much about the first but I’m delighted to have been able to address the second and put this festival together,” Dravet said. p> “So many of these films haven’t been seen on a cinema screen for more than 20 years. I wanted to assemble a selection of his films that covers the obvious classics, which never get tired. And Hitchcock’s favourite is in the festival too – the remarkable Shadow Of A Doubt.”

The festival, which will also screen at Nova Cinemas Melbourne, Wallis Cinemas Mitcham (SA) and Windsor Theatre Perth on various dates and complements the release on July 21 of the documentary Hitchcock/Truffaut, an exploration of the series of interviews conducted between the two great directors.
