2016 SCREEN MUSIC AWARDS - WINNERS

Plenty of familiar names in this year's Screen Music Awards, notably Antony Partos, Neil Sutherland and Caitlin Yeo, but some are making their award debuts, such as Peter Cavallo and Adam Moses; and Emmy Award winning screen composer Ashley Irwin returned as musical director for the fourth consecutive year.

Hundreds of screen music’s leading figures gathered on November 8 at the City Recital Hall in Sydney for the 2016 Screen Music Awards. Staged jointly by APRA AMCOS and the AGSC (Australian Guild of Screen Composers), the event paid tribute to composers across 12 categories who made an impact with their work in the previous year.

Voted for by a panel of respected industry judges from the film, television, advertising and music industries, this year’s winners included a mix of highly established names and rising talents.

Antony Partos and Matteo Zingales took out the prestigious Feature Film Score of the Year award for their atmospheric electronic score for the film 99 Homes. Antony made it a double this year, also receiving the award for Best Soundtrack Album for his work on the critically acclaimed documentary Sherpa, taking his Screen Music Awards total haul to 11 since 2014.

Multi-skilled composer Alan John received his fourth Screen Music Award, this time in the category of Best Music for a Mini-Series or Telemovie for his work on the celebrated ABC mini-series The Beautiful Lie.

The honour of Best Television Theme went to composer Peter Cavallo who took home his first ever Screen Music Award for the string laden opening theme for series Nos Youm.

Sally and Darren Seltmann’s song Dancing in the Darkness for ABC television series The Letdown won the pair their first Screen Music Award. The husband and wife duo’s collaboration took out Best Original Song Composed for the Screen.

Roger Mason received his tenth Screen Music Award with his work on the original SBS crime drama The Principal winning Best Music for a Television Series or Serial. The Principal tells the story of a former Deputy at a prestigious girls’ school who is promoted to the notoriously difficult Boxdale Boys High.

Sydney composer Caitlin Yeo won the award for Best Music for a Documentary for Getting Frank Gehry. Her score was the perfect accompaniment for the irreverent documentary which followed the creative process of world renowned architect, Frank Gehry, as he created his very first building in Australia. It’s the third Screen Music Award win for Caitlin, who also received an APRA Professional Development Award in 2011.

Adam Moses took out his first Screen Music Award in the category of Best Music for a Short Film for Banana Boy. The 15 minute film, which was successfully crowdfunded via Pozible, tells the story of Omid, a young refugee who will not speak, nor eat anything but bananas.

New York based Jeremy Yang was also a first time Screen Music Award recipient, with his work for the 2016 AICP (Association of Independent Commercial Producers) Opening named Best Music for an Advertisement.

Composers Michael Darren, Luke Jurevicius and Christopher Larkin won the Screen Music Award for Best Music for Children’s Television for their collaboration on the animated Australian children’s series The New Adventures of Figaro Pho: Odd Socks.

For the ninth consecutive year, composer Neil Sutherland was named Most Performed Screen Composer – Overseas, taking his overall tally of Screen Music Awards to 11. Composer Jay Stewart was the Most Performed Screen Composer – Australia and has now received this award eight times!

The 2016 Screen Music Awards were hosted by Chris Taylor and Andrew Hansen and featured presenters Justine Clarke, Dave Stewart, Jon Stevens, Michael Dorman, Raelee Hill, Craig Hall, Fiona Cameron, Jeremy Lindsay-Taylor and Fraser Stark.

The evening included a special performance by Mahalia Barnes, Jade MacRae and Juanita Tippins of Risk It from Jessica Mauboy’s number one album The Secret Daughter (from The Secret Daughter). Singer Paula Arundell performed vocals on Song to the Siren from Candy (2006). The song, which was originally composed by Tim Buckley and Larry Becket, was arranged for the film by Australian composer Paul Charlier.

Emmy Award winning screen composer Ashley Irwin returned as musical director for the fourth consecutive year and led an orchestra that provided beautiful renditions of some of the nominated works throughout the ceremony. The event opened with Ashley’s tribute to Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film The Lodger – a contemporary orchestral score he composed in 1999. This film premiered 90 years ago, coinciding with the inception of APRA in 1926.
